Strangers’ Hall occupies a Georgian townhouse on Charing Cross in the heart of Norwich city centre. The museum, run by Norfolk Museums Service, documents the lives of the people who lived and worked in the building across four centuries. Rooms are arranged as they would have been in the past, from the Tudor kitchens and parlours on the lower floors to the bedrooms and children’s nursery above, each furnished with period pieces and everyday objects that reveal how Norwich households functioned from the 16th century onwards.
The building takes its name from the foreign merchants, or ‘strangers’, who settled in Norwich during the 16th and 17th centuries and contributed significantly to the city’s prosperity through the textile trade. The museum is open Wednesday to Friday from 10:00 to 16:00 and Sunday from 13:00 to 16:30. Admission is charged. It lies within easy walking distance of Norwich Cathedral and the city’s market square, making it a natural stop for anyone exploring the medieval core of the city.
